Prison

Prison and criminalism are actually not my concern. But since I had to write a short essay about prison, I could not run away to think about the prison. It is not a big secret anymore that prisons in Indonesia have a bad management. Fortunately, I didn’t have to make an essay about that. Thinking of the fact that the law institution has turned out to be a place for many crimes is so irritating.

Every country has its own regulations on how to reduce the crime rate of their  countries. The regulations may be different, but they have a similar way to put people who are sued to be criminal in the prison. Some people think that it is an effective tool. But others think, it isn’t.

It seems that prisons are effective to make people not do any crimes. Prisons are built to make people scared. Living in the prison is absolutely not a choice. No one want to live without any fun, get trapped in a small room and have to share your life with someone that you don’t expect. People also need punishment for what they did –if they did a crime. This behavioral theory of human is well understood by many people and is applied to control human behavior. In this point of view, prisons are an effective tool in reducing the crime. And of course, we can imagine that if all of the criminals are put in prison, they will not be able to harm, or do something bad to other people who live outside of the prison.

Some people who think that prisons are not effective in reducing the crime probably assumed that crime doesn’t naturally run in the human’s blood. They believe that there are many other factors that lead people to do a bad thing. For example, the violence that is showed by the television day by day has influenced people to do the same thing as they watched. Prison is not the answer for this issue. The social pathology can only be cured by respecting humanity, taking care of our children and society with love. The critics are also addressed to what do the prison give to the prisoners? Do they give some soft skills that can be used when the prisoners back to the society? Or does the environment and atmosphere of the prisons not change them into a better person?

In my opinion, prisons may be an effective tool in reducing the crime. But to prevent the crime is much more important. Prisons are the last thing that we can give to people who cannot accept the rule of humanity. However, they, the criminals, are still a human, have to be treated as human even when they have to spend their life in prison. Treating them with no respect will only result another problem: they go back to the society and repeat to do crime or even worse. That is my opinion, what about yours?
